How to cook Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
Today I’m going to teach you how to cook a famous Korean dish that you will definitely enjoy eating when your dish is Galbijjim.
Galbijjim is one of the most delicious for me that when I eat it I can eat two bowls of rice. I want to share with you how to cook it so you can also taste one of the delicious Korean dishes.
Where did I learn to cook Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
I learned to cook Galbijjim from my Korean acquaintance who is a good cook. He was the first one to make me taste this kind of food that I will never forget because it was the first time I tasted it.
I asked him how to cook it and he said that it is very easy to make and he is not wrong because I quickly learned how to cook Galbijjim.
What is Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
Galbijjim is traditional Korean food that in English is called Braised Beef Short Ribs. This is a Braised Beef that is boiled to become tender and seasoned to make it more delicious. It is usually served during holidays, birthdays and other occasions.
I bought beef at S&R yesterday at 4pm and soaked it in water for 1 hour until the red color (blood) disappeared from the meat.
What are the ingredients of Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
- 2 kilo of braised beef
- 1 big carrots
- 1 big radish
- 2 potato
- 1 big white onion/red onion, but for me I usually used a white onion
- Galbijjim sauce
- onion leeks
- Mushroom
It will cost you quite a lot to cook Galbijjim because beef is expensive, and you also need to buy ingredients.
What I spent on cooking Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs was 2,500 pesos including the ingredients.
Reminders
If you are going to cook Galbijjim, buy Beef at S&R, the best beef is from New Zealand and Australia that you can only buy at S&R.
The beef I chose to buy is from Australia which I bought at S&R it costs 1600 pesos for 2 kilos
I didn’t regret my beef purchase because it was worth the price, the meat was super tender and it smelled so good that you could really smell the beef while it was cooking.
How to cook Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
- Soak the beef in water for 1 hour with only weak water ( 2 kilos of beef)
- Boil the beef, and when it boils, discard the first broth and wash the boiled beef with fresh water to remove the smell.
- Boil the beef again with fresh water wait 30 minutes with high heat.
- Check the boiled beef for tenderness.
- If the meat is tender but still has some water, reduce the water. The water you leave in your pot should be equal to the amount of beef.
- If you think the broth equals beef, add some sauce. ( boiled again for 30 minutes )
- Check if the soup has thickened, it’s delicious to your taste, add the radish, carrots, potato and onion and wait another 30 minutes.
- When the beef and vegetables are soft, put mushroom and wait 3 minutes and add onion leeks and you can serve it.
It’s really easy to cook, the process just takes a long time because you have to boil it for a long time until it softens

What is a good sauce for Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
I chose this sauce to mix with my Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs and I don’t regret it because it turned out to be very good. I bought 2 bottles because I cooked 2 kilos of beef. It’s not hard to find because you can find it in Korean stores.
How to cook Galbijjim / Braised Beef Short Ribs
INSTRUCTION
- Cut the beef
- Soak the beef in water for about 1 hour
- First boil the beef for a while
- After boiling, discard the broth and wash the boiled beef again.
- Boil the beef again in clean water until the meat is slightly tender.
- And when it’s a little soft, put the Galbijjim sauce ( 소갈비 /Gabli sauce for beef ) Wait until the sauce thickens with the beef. wait for 30 minutes.
- If the beef sauce is thick, add the vegetables such as potato, carrots, radish and onion and wait for 30 minutes until the vegetables are soft.
- When the vegetables are soft, then add the mushrooms, wait for 3 to 4 minutes and then you can add the onion leeks.
- Taste the beef, if it is tasty, you can serve it on the table.
And did you know that Galbijjim is also delicious with jachae noodles, just soak the noodles in water until they soften and then put them in the pot with your cooked Galbijjim and boil again for 4 minutes until the noodles are soft.
In the Galbijjim that I cooked today, I didn’t add japchae noodles because we ran out of it.
